SENATOR DONALD NORCROSS STATEMENT ON THE FINAL REPORT OF THE UMDNJ ADVISORY COMMITTEE

"Over the years, both Rowan University and Rutgers-Camden have successfully built strong local institutions with world-class reputations. Any proposal that strengthens both institutions and results in South Jersey finally receiving its fair share of higher education funding is worth our serious consideration. It is time to stem the flow of capital and operational dollars from moving up the Turnpike.

It is vital that any potential new entity achieves Research University status of the highest classification under New Jersey law as outlined in the report. I also expect that it would be an equal joining of these institutions, not a folding of one into the other. This would be reflected in the naming of the potential new institution, which must be respectful of both distinguished universities. Likewise, the development of the governing body should reflect the interests and diversity of both communities. I look forward to having a full and open dialogue on this proposal with all parties as this process continues."
